Modern moms guide to Telecommuting by Lauren Stern
Overall good book, it has a good structure and examples. Unlike some of the books this one does not get into statistics (which we can find from other sources). The kindle version of the book is free.
The book mentions six key attributes for being a successful telecommuter:
a. Disciplined and self-motivated
b. Ability to work with little supervision
d. Flexible and adaptable
e. Ability to stay connected with your co-workers
These attributes would apply for any person in the workforce. The book touches upon some of the advantages for being a telecommuter:
b. Cost savings on gas, clothes etc. and
c. Extra time that you save by not travelling
The book also talks about some of the challenges:
a. Separation of work and home
b. Maintaining a routine
c. Avoiding isolation
d. Feeling appreciated or validated
e. Becoming overextended
The challenges are the area where this blog will focus on and some of the solutions. Like other books this one touches on the challenges but does not offer ideas on how to address them or give strategies to work thru them and find the balance.
Managing your virtual boss by Carmela Southers
This is a well written book but not specific for virtual employees, the principles can be used by anyone. One comment that stood out was—Approach virtual work by assuming that no one understands what you do.
